where might I find parts for the LCD screen and how hard is it take one apart to do the replacement?
I can't be of much use, but I have heard that the 17" Widescreen TFT Panels for these iMacs (I have one :-D) are insanely expensive.
A quick look on ze internet shows a 17" Hitatchi (square) screen for 350. When you consider that Apples TFTs are miles better than any other on the market, then consider that it is WideScreen 1:1.6, then consider the number of pixels, my guess is that it wouldn't be worth it in the end.
Unless you buy a Mini-VGA to VGA adapter, axe the silver neck and screen off the iMac, have a white dome on your desk attached to a CRT then prey to god that it still works, then I wouldn't bother if I were you.
Shame really, they're excellent machines.
