My son has an Imac an older tray loading unit, right now with only 96 megs, but I wanted to update or reinstall the system and I was going to do it on one of the partitions on his 40 gig and it wouldn't let me , it said it had to be within the first 8 gigs, but this was 10.2.8

In short, I can confidently say you shouldn't have anyproblems adding in
Panther, except keep in mind you'll still have to have two partitions- one OS
9 and one OS X because of the way your iMac was built.

Not at all, there is no need for separate partitions unless you particularly
want them. My iMac DV 400 MHz has an 80 GB disk, with both 10.3 and 9.2.2 on
the same partition. It runs OK with 512 MB RAM, but I tend to use my eMac
more now due the the larger screen.
