DHCP? Connected to a router/switch/hub? Directly connected to that device or going between a patch panel?
When it is on the network, is everything working - internet? network shares?
More info is needed to supply a more positive answer.
Otherwise, I will throw this in the fire - maybe it will help.
If you have another PC/MAC, connect it in your iMac's place and see if it has the same problem.
Also, try a different port on your router/switch/hub. Try a different router/switch/hub. Directly connect your iMac to the router, or DHCP server.
Try hardcoding an IP into TCP/IP - then try pinging out. First loopback (127.0.0.1) then the IP of the NIC, then the DHCP server/router. See if that can get out.
If you can ping the router/DHCP server, then there may be an issue with throughput not connectivity.

I have a slot-loading CD iMac (new in June 2000) that has on-again and
off-again problem connecting to an office 10/100 network. I've ruled out
cabling as the problem, and I don't think the integrated network port is
bad, either. When I do get the iMac to see the network (servers and
printers), some sort of glitch later with knock it off the network. Several
restarts later, the iMac might see the network; sometimes it won't. After
reinstalling the System Folder once, the iMac saw the network, only to be
kicked off later following a system lock-up. I've also thrown away
network-related preferences, thinking a file might have become corrupted.
Has anyone else had this problem and come up with a solution?
