The problem may be with the port on the iMac? We did have one go bad on a Summer 2000 slot loader. If you have a peecee using friend they may have a USB/ethernet adapter. Plug that into one of the iMac's USB ports and use it to connect to your ethernet. If all works well, you've pretty much narrowed it down to a hardware problem with the iMac port.
