I am having practically the same problem with my tray loading grape iMac.
I recently bought a Grape iMac for a back up computer and for me to work on when my wife is using the main Mac. I really like it except for one problem. I think the tray loading CD ROM is not working correctly. It won't recognize some of the discs I burned on my other Mac. It tries to spin up, then spin down a few times, asks me to initialize them, which, of course, it can't do. Even my old Performa 6300 will play them. When I try to play an mp3 file off of a disc through iTunes (I'm running OS 9 and 96 megs of RAM), it will play for a while, stop, then pick up later in the song. I don't know if it's a software problem or hardware problem. I'm totally ignorant of the iMacs, so there might be something I missed. Other than that, I love the machine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Fred
