Emily,

Actually, what I meant was that you should burn the discs as slow as
tolerable, i.e.,
4x or slower. Also, I know that CD-RW media is sometimes less
readable by some CD-ROM drives. This is because the underlying
substrate/dye is different than CD-Rs, since the CD-RWs have to be
able to reverse the process when you erase/re-burn the disc. CD-RW
media uses smaller (or shallower) pits (the mark made by the laser) so
the drive has to be better at detecting these pits.

Older drives tended to not be as good at detecting this smaller
threshold, since I suppose at the time they mostly read
factory-pressed CDs (the pits are stamped in and not burned at all, if
I understand correctly) or CD-Rs.

So in a nutshell:
   1) CD-R is more reliably read vs. CD-RW, which you said you already
tried in your original note.
   2) Try burning at 4x or slower. All the way down to 1x if you have to.
   3) Try different brand of media (which I think you also said you
tried). The Ridata CD-R media that I found that works on our iMac I
think was bought from Office Max or Office Depot. It came in a 50 or
100pk.

Worst case scenario maybe you could use an external USB CD-ROM drive?
Should be quite cheap nowadays.

Good luck.
