We have a Grape 333Mhz iMac with similar issues in reading burned CDs.
The tray-loading CD-ROM is essentially a laptop CD-ROM drive. Laptop
drives can be sensitive to both the brand of the CD-R/RW media and the
burn speed as well. I think this is due to a lower tolerance in the
range of variations (different burners, different media) in the
microscopic data pits on the media that they can handle.

I've found that my Memorex 24x 700MB CD-Rs usually won't read on the
grape iMac CD-ROM, but a no-name brand (Ridata I think?) 48X CD-R do
mostly work.

Anyway, you might try a different brand media and/or burn at 1-4x to
see if that helps.
