I appreciate your sentiments, considering my problem the other day.  I 
went to Sherlock typed in key caps and here's the scoop:

It took me a few days to work out it was not a hardware problem.
Actually it is a bit ridiculous to have all these obscure, and vaguely 
documented, functions turned on for all, to be discovered by accident; 
they should be off by default, with advanced users able to turn them 
on.
