Under the international preferences (the little flag menulet) you'll find the "show character palette", the next line down is "show keyboard viewer". Thats the one you want. There's the old keycaps layout. Select the font you're using , then press the shift, option or both keys to see the available characters, diacriticals, etc. offered for that typeface.
You might need to enable it first in the Preferences Pane, though (it was disabled in my configuration, and I don't remember doing it myself).
From the little flag menulet you need to choose last option (Open International...) -- or just go there from Preferences -- and in the Input Menu tab check "Keyboard Viewer." Only then it will appear in the menulet, as referenced in Jack's post.
