This is a latent heart attack for everybody - at least once. I did it when hunting and pecking for the 'degrees' sign. (Where is 'Key Caps' under OS X?)
Actually, you type Shift-Option-8 to get the degrees sign.
When you turn on the Character Palette as mentioned before you can also turn on the Keyboard Viewer which acts like the old Key Caps.
What you will see when you turn these on is a flag (American if you use the American English language) appear on the right side of your menu bar. Underneath are the new Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer.
