This is a latent heart attack for everybody - at least once. I did it when hunting and pecking for the 'degrees' sign. (Where is 'Key Caps' under OS X?)
Let me answer these for you:
Degrees is option-8.
"Key Caps" isn't called that under Panther (I can't remember the situation in Jag, someone else will have to let you know about that). It's now called "Character Palette" and is found here:
Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> International -> Input Menu.
Just turn "on" Character Palette and a little US Flag (or whatever language you primarily work with) will appear in the menu bar. Character Palette will always be available in that menu.
