I am trying to help a friend with their broken iMac. I know that it is a Revision A or B, it is running OS X 10.2, and might have a memory upgrade.
This is the problem that they described.
it froze two weeks ago, then when i would restart it via the small restart button it stops in the middle (on gray apple screen) all noise and the little "progress wheel" stop and at the same time a big line of "snow" appears and with a smaller one below it too- i finally got it to completely start up yesterday but the screen was frozen and couldn't move arrow- tried connecting mouse directly via USB in case of loose connection but it didn't help
Does any one have any suggestions?
Sounds to me like the hard disk or the RAM has gone south somewhere, causing a crash when the machine is under the most strain (i.e. boot time). The random nature and the fact it's struggling to even boot and the screen is corrupting suggests RAM, but it may also just be having a hell of a time reading the drive.
Pull all the RAM and replace it a stick at a time, making sure it's seated correctly (don't believe the 128MB hype BTW - I've booted OS X 10.2 on a machine with 64MB RAM before now), then if that doesn't produce results it may be a good idea to see if you can source a known good spare hard disk (any ATA drive of 120GB or smaller will do) and try that. If the RAM is good and the new drive produces no results then it looks pretty bleak for the little guy unless folks with more specific experience can help, I'm just using my general Mac diagnostic knowledge...
