Does any one have any suggestions?
As Steve just mentioned, I would begin by hauling out any CD's I had that should work as boot CD's and seeing if I could get the computer to boot off one of them. If it does, it would suggest that the proglem is not in the computer hardware but rather something to do with the data on the internal hard drive.
It might be a candidate for Disk Warrior, which I feel is today the best hard drive utility to have around. If you have a copy of Disk Warrior, you might still have to call Alsoft to buy an upgrade if you need to work on OS 10.3. But first try the Disk Warrior CD you have ... it will tell you if it sees something that warrants an upgrade, I think.
Good luck!
