I am starting to think that way too. Even the installation of OS 9 that I did on the other partition from within Panther is giving me a fit. So now I am looking for Panther on CD to try and start over with.I really don't know but I think it might be a bad idea to install on a G4 and then move the drive to a G3. The OS X installer probably configures things differently based on the processor type.
This may not be a problem like I said I really don't know. Just a thought.
The black boxes all over the screen are what is called in UNIX language a 'Kernel Panic'. This is when the core module that runs the whole system comes across an error it can't deal with and has to give up and stop the OS to prevent damage. Strangely this usually is 'hidden' by the screen going dim and a dialog appearing that says 'you need to restart your computer' in about 20 languages or something.
My suspiscion is the following:
A) Your install is wrong because it was carried out on a G4 PowerMac and the architecture of the whole machine is different. I'm personally not aware of any 'special' things that are installed per system in OS X (all my installs on different machines have all the Kernel Extensions for various hardware for example). Also I have used OS X installs from G4s on G3s before, even on pre-G3 machines with G3 cards, without issue. All those however were not iMacs...
B) You have a flakey hard drive and either the OS files or the Swap File for the memory is being slowly corrupted to death.
C) You have a dead RAM DIMM somewhere.
D) OS X is stretching your machine to the maximum and it's getting too hot.
E) Your references to struggling to install OS 9 lead me maybe to suspect the IDE is going south in the board?
All only suggestions, no solid diagnosis as that is hard to do without seeing the machine in person and diagnosing it by hand.
