 Ni-cads are usually  cheaper most are 1.2 volt per cell if you get a
 battery holder and connect  3 in series  (+ to - ) you get 3.6 volt.
 You  can use cheap penlite units. Also check out some cordless phone
 handset batteries  as a lot of them are 3.6 volt. You could get away
 using the 3.0 volt battery but only for short time. The voltage would
 only have to drop say to about 2.8  volt before it would fail.

I just got a 3.6 Volt battery here in Arlington, Texas yesterday for 5.99$ (US Dollars) before sales tax at a store called Fry's Electronics.
