Before we go too far with this, could you comment on how you are managing to get the iMac up and running when, from your description, both the Restart and Shut Down commands result in a situation where the iMac does not boot back up properly? I'm wondering if you have left something out of your condition description. Any chance that the conditions you describe are only intermittent?
