"Yes I failed to mention that upon first plugging the iMac in, pressing the Power button yields a full normal boot up.

I have to unplug and then plug it back in to boot normally."

Before we go too far with this, could you comment on how you are managing to get the iMac up and running when, from your description, both the Restart and Shut Down commands result in a situation where the iMac does not boot back up properly?
