For what it is worth, I had an iMac that suffered from a similar ailment for
years - except in my case, if you shut down normally it would behave
properly, but if it went to sleep it needed to be unplugged from the wall
and plugged back in before it would respond. Also if it crashed and needed
to be rebooted it would need unplugging and replugging first. I had a tech
look at it but he was baffled so it just stayed that way.  It's not a
problem peculiar to your iMac, although that won't be any consolation, I
know!
