It also did it with 9.2, which was installed when I had the machine. It is not related to the software.

However while dissasembling nad peering into the imac i noticed that a wire pair toward the front of the machine where the power button is located is disconnected and just dangling there. Too bad I canont get to this. how do i get to the stuff in the front of the machine?

We have a tray-loader here that bongs on power up, but never gets a
display and never changes the power light from yellow to green. By
swapping parts we've determined it is somewhere in the logic board/drive
assembly, not the monitor/power supply section.
