I also have an iMac DV 400MHz and put a new drive in her earlier this year.
It was easy to do (using Carbon Copy Cloner and a borrowed external drive)
and my Mac is now *much* quieter and (I think, also this is subjective)
cooler.

I chose a Samsung SpinPoint 120GB 7200RPM drive with 8MB cache. Not the
fastest performer (but the bus speed limits that, I think anyway) in tests,
but was reviewed as being very quiet and came with a 2 year warranty. I'd
certainly recommend it.
