Any drive will do. I've heard that the newer faster drives with 8mb cache
may run too hot for the imacs without a fan. Don't know if this is true or
not but it seems to work fine in my DV450 for the last year.

It's not true. I have several fanless iMacs I have put these 8MB cache/7200 RPM drives into, and in fact they actually run COOLER than the original 5400RPM drives the iMacs came with (probably due to improvements in ball-bearing or other drive technology).


As long as it is an ATA IDE drive it will work. I don't understand why they
say it is "PC compatible"

Because some people are blindingly stupid. :)
