Thanks for all of your responses. I picked up a maxtel 80gig hard drive at
staples for 50. got a good deal but now someone told me it might not be the
hard drive so I need another opinion before I open the box.

This is the story:

The iMac would boot up and be fine for 10-20 minutes then would freeze. When
restarted a map of north/south america would show up then the sad mac.

After it had been cold for a while, I started it up and backed up the hard
drive. I then reformatted the drive and when I went to load up the system it
started to load and after 5 minutes or so it stopped, said it couldn't
finish because the disk was bad and then froze. I restarted and tried again
it started to boot from the disk and then we heard what sounded like a ball
bearing spin and clink then it continued to boot from the disk and no hard
drive appeared on the desk top. The disk booted but said the hard drive was
damaged.

Someone told me it sounded like the CPU went because of the sound.????
Anyone else think it could be this?

If I took out a hard drive from a g3 233 beige desktop could that work to
test in the iMac?

Thanks again!
