I have a 200 Gb One Touch external firewire/USB drive. My Graphite Special Edition, slot loading DVD iMac had systems 9.2.2 (not just emulation mode) and 10.3.4 on it when I garbaged the Maxtor drive.
System 9.2.2 had been very flaky even after using DiskWarrior 3.0.2 (booting from the disk). So I used a copy of Norton SystemWorks 2.0 (booting from it). After taking several runs at the internal hard drive with Norton Utilities, it seemed that the problems on that drive were fixed. I used DiskWarrior one last time on the internal 30 Gb drive. System 9.2.2 worked like a champ. I had not yet tried system 10.3.4. Since I had had such great success with the internal hard drive I tried the same thing with the external drive. Norton Utilities reported there were major difficulties and would I care to fix them. I said OK. Once done, I ran DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior went only a little ways and stopped saying the disk directory was too damaged to repair and that I would need a disk repair utility to fix the drive. It said to contact DiskWarrior Technicians to see if there was anything they could suggest. I gave them the fault numbers that DiskWarrior returned. They sent back an Email and said that my choice was to send the drive to a disk recovery company. Do any of you have any suggestions on what could be done. The disk does not show up on the desk top. The disk repair utility on disk 1 of the System 10.3 install disks is not able to fix it. Norton wants to initialize it now. Maxtor has offered no help or suggestions to this point.
