Hi there - If this question is too far off topic just
yell and I will cease and desist. We have been
looking for a used G4 computer for a boy with special
needs. He is currently sharing Daddy's G4 500
computer and office space so things are a bit close
for comfort. After months of never really finding the
right combination of price, location and processor
speed, lo and behold I found both a G4 450 Cube and a
G4 400 tower today at separate yard sales. The cube
is running fine and the owner wants $440 for the
processor, keyboard and mouse with standard RAM, HD,
etc. The tower is described as below by the owner in
a followup email.
-----------------------------------------
Here is the info about the Power Mac G4 you inquired
about today at the yard sale. It is 400-MHz Power PC
G4, 1MB backside level 2 cache, 128MB of SDRAM, 4 DIMM
slots support up to 1.5GB of memory, ATI RAGE 128 PRO
AGP 2x graphics card with 16MB of SDRAM graphics
memory, 20GB 7200-rpm Ultra ATA/66 hard disk drive,
DVD-ROM drive with DVD playback, Built in Zip (100MB)
Drive, 3 firewire ports, 2 USB ports, Built in 10/100
Base T Ethernet, Internal Modem, Mac OS9, USB keyboard
and mouse.
The G4 has not been feeling up to par as of late, and
I confident that it is because I don't know enough
about it, and am sure it is fixable, I have briefly
attempted to find someone in the area to take a look
at and give a diagnosis, but have not got in contact
with anyone yet. I tried to fix it on my own by doing
a software restore, and that seemed to not be the best
idea. I am a novice as far as understanding how to
fix my apple.
-----------------------------------------
The owner said it was running fine until he tried to
update to OS X without "updating" OS 9 first. Since
then, it won't run. He thought a running G4 was worth
$400 but said he would "lighten" the price due to the
issues.
Does anyone have thoughts on the value of a G4 400 in
such condition? I am thinking somewhere around $250
but I do not wish to insult - or overpay.
Also, there seem to be dozens of websites on how to
recover if OS X is installed before updating the
firmware of OS 9. Is there one acknowledged authority
on the matter? Possibly the Apple tech articles?
The computer will be used for DVD viewing, internet
games, kiddie game playing and other typical kid
stuff.
Sorry for the OT post but the iMac list is my one and
only mailing list resource. I will be glad to take it
elsewhere if this is too far afield.
Thanks, John
