Before you do any of that - check your friend's laptop network neighborhood property and see if her mini-bridge thingy is turned on and if your friend's ethernet and wireless adaptor are connected to it (not physically, of course). If so, disconnect them and disable the bridge. It is probably the cost for non internet access. It's one of those Microsoft thing that seems like a good idea in theory but doesn't work 100% in practice.

She's been able to use the internet before...but I'll try it anyways...so, what's a bridge and how do you disable it?
