Most of the ink resellers (think4ink, cartridgeworld, etc) sell a cartridge with cleaning fluid in it that you install and run the cleaning program. The fluid cleans out the jets on the printer pretty good. Then you install new cartridges and are on your way.
After some looking around the cleaning cartridges appear to only be available for Epson printers.
Following Steve Brown's suggestion I Googled "Canon i470D" -- a good suggestion, but mostly retailers, old reviews, cartridge purveyors -- no "i470d support groups."
And any "repair center" around here (eastern Massachusetts) will charge more than a semi disposable new printer will cost.
I did find where a local MUG meets, and will see if it may help their donate-a-Mac to a South African charity program.
Any suggestions for a high quality durable printer?
