As far as Ken's claim that loaning of a CD is theft of intellectual property, I'd like to see some reference to an actual law or court decision, as I've never heard of such nonsense. People have been loaning each other books ever since there have been books, and Ben Franklin promoted the practice as a social virtue. How is loaning a record/CD/DVD any different? I'm not talking about making copies to distribute, but just loaning an item.

Reason #2 is okay, but not #4? I think you got it reversed. You buy a single user license when you purchase a CD, LP, 8 track or cassette. Loaning of these items is theft of intellectual property, where making yourself dups,
in whatever format you choose is right of the ownership of that individual use license. When you download software is it not policy that you burn yourself a copy of the software because you know something will go wrong? Or do you contend that if your system breaks down that any and all software lost must be repurchased?
I also disagree with your contention that you are purchasing new copies of movies or music because the technology's improved, you are purchasing a new copy because the old one broke.
Your apologelia for the recording industry is not legally sound, nor is it based on any real laws, simply a view stated strongly, that some may fail to realize is but a puff of warm breath.

There are other legitimate (and ought-to-be and probably are legal) reasons to back up a DVD, including having children, users with special needs, and travel where it's not practical/safe to carry the original disc.
Badger lists several other good reasons to have a backup of one's DVD, except the last one: that one carries absolutely no legal or moral weight. We all bought CDs to replace our LPs (where possible), so the fact that you've bought the same movie several times just doesn't cut it. You're not buying the movie -- you're buying the medium the film is on, and a license to watch/use the movie within certain parameters. You're supposed to re-buy it as many times as you like -- no more and no less. Nobody is forcing you to replace your VHS copy with a DVD copy, it is the superior image/sound/etc that makes you re-buy the film.
If I went back to a movie theatre and demanded to be admitted for free since I had recently seen the film elsewhere and thus had "paid for it," I'd be laughed right out to the curb, and thus should the notion that we've "paid" for the films/music/etc we've enjoyed over the years.
One of the things I like about the iTunes Music Store and their DRM scheme is that it is CLEARLY spelled out what rights and uses I am buying for my 99 cents. No ambiguity, no legal gray areas. You may find them restrictive (I don't), but at least you know EXACTLY what they are and can choose to buy or not buy fully informed.
