Yes, you can do this. If you mount a DVD as a disk in the finder, when opening it you will see a folder called VIDEO_TS. Copy that folder onto your hard drive. DVD Player (and VLC, btw) can play the contents of that folder.
Hmmmm... I was under the impression that DVDs are encrypted and it's not possible to do so? (it did not work on a PC, I never tried it on a Macintosh) On my Powerbook, I used the program called DVDBackup (version 1.3)... but of course it's debatable if what I did was actually legal.
