. . . . I find Apple Works 6 to be a slower than using OS 9.2.2 on my old iMac G3 400 MHz with 512 RAM. Does anyone know why, or if I can improve it?
Thanks, Sherry
Hi Sherry,
You may already be aware of this, but I'll broadcast it for the general good, because I think it may not be well known (It's not well documented, anyway.)
I've read - perhaps in one of Charles Moore's Applelinks columns - that AppleWorks maintains a copy of every document you've ever created with it, and actually loads it into memory whenever you launch the program. Whether that's true or not, I don't really know. But you can easily go to your documents folder where you'll find an AppleWorks folder. Somewhere inside THAT folder (sorry I can't be specific: I'm on another computer at the moment which doesn't have AW) you'll find a "recent items" or "starting points" folder. If you haven't looked in here, you may be suprised how much stuff has accumulated. [Are these more than aliases? Perhaps someone with AW in front of them can check.] If it's true that everything loads upon launch, no wonder AW gets slower the more you use it. Periodically trashing whatever you can from here can help a little. (I never use the default documents folder; I always save my work in my own folders to which I give more specific names. I was appalled the first time I looked in the AppleWorks folder - clearing out the junk did give me a bit of a speed boost. Or felt like it anyway!)
Disclaimer: I've only used Appleworks for a year or so, so what I think is not well known may have been run deep into the ground long before I joined this list.
Apologies, if so ;-) I'd love to be corrected by someone with more knowledge and experience!
FWIW, Brian Joyce
