No doubt the solution is something really simple. But it still eludes me.
Maybe the answer was wrong. Are you using OS X or OS 9? In OS 9 the control is still there but it's under the edit heading in the menu bar as: Edit-Preferences-General-Show fonts in actual fonts, instead of handily being under AppleWorks in the menu bar as in OS X.
