How can I stop QuickTime from automatically wanting to look for the last version of this and that?

I don't think that splash/nag can be eliminated unless you pay for QuickTime Pro.

If you're talking about the screen that comes up every time you launch QuickTime, suggesting that you upgrade to Pro, I read a clever solution in one of David Pogue's books. Haven't tried it so I don't know firsthand if it works but it goes like this: Set your system date & time to sometime in the future, well beyond the expected lifespan of your computer. Then launch QuickTime and click "later" when it asks. Quit QuickTime, then reset date and time back to your local reality. QuickTime should no longer trouble you. Until you reach that date it's looking for.

Like, I say, I've never tried it, but it sounds intriguing! It has never bothered me enough to get off my . . . my chair and do something about it, but now I've got my own curiousity roused. Maybe today!
