I just bought a Maxtor 200GB drive ($99) and put it into a new
MacAlly 100AF Firewire case. However, I can't get it to mount on the
desktop of my G4 iMac nor does it show up in Disk Utility. Have I
wasted my money? I thought that I could partition it into two 100GB
partitions and use one as a back-up for my G4 iMac and the other for
my G4 Powerbook.

What should I do first?

The first thing I would do is swap out the firewire cable with another one, and try a different FW port. This will help track down where the problem might lie.

You might also listen carefully to the drive and see if it's starting up. If not, you may have forgotten or incorrectly connected the electrics or data cable. Or it could possibly be a dead drive, but let's assume that's not the case.

You might also check with MacAlly about this particular model; it may require a firmware update in order to work with 10.3.6.
