I'm pretty sure the cooling fan is kaput and the computer crashes after it's been left on for a while. I can't hear the fan, either, and I used to be able to. I tried taking this thing apart a couple of years ago, but didn't get very far. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hunh? There is no fan in an iMac DV. It's a fanless design. The only thing to make a fan like whirring noise is the hard drive or the CD when in use. As old as an iMac 400DV is, either could be on it's way to the happy hunting ground. You can find take apart information on the Acellerate your Mac web iste and the MacWorld archives on their web site, but there is no fan to replace.
Yikes! This is not good news! This means my HD is about to go down. This is not the original hard drive, either. I replaced that a couple of years ago. It seems to me that this computer, when functioning "normally" makes a quiet whirring sound, which it no longer makes. I guess I just assumed that it was a fan. I tried taking the iMac apart back when the hard drive was replaced, but didn't get far. This is very frustrating as I fancy myself as a "hands on" Mac guy. Fortunately, several of you good folks have emailed me the take apart manuals, so I should, hopefully, be able to go in and replace the hard drive. Any suggestions for a reliable brand? I guess I'll go into the Apple System Profiler and find out what brand that I've got in there now (so I can avoid it!). Would it not make sense to add a fan? Is there no space, power plugs, etc?
