I did not know that a G4 iMac was capable of running Macintosh...I
thought it would just run Mac Open Step X.  Now there is a reason to
look at a G4 iMac.

No, you are confused.

No G4 iMac will *boot* OS 9.

All iMacs (including G5 ones) will *run* OS 9 as Classic, allowing you to run your old printers, scanners and programs from OS 9 under OS X. While not 100% compatible with everything *ever* written for OSes 7-9, I'd almost anything a typical user might want to keep is fully compatible (except fax/telephony or other hardware-manipulation programs).
