  Before you decide on anything, try to reset the modem and restart the Imac
a few times doing that and disconnect the line from the modem and reconnect
it, and generally play around before you decide there is  a real problem.
Both of my Imacs give me a little problem connecting on occasion.  Sometimes
my older one when it goes into sleep mode and then I wake it up I'll have to
restart it before the modem will work.  If anyone can explain that to me I
be glad to listen.  If all else fails, a new modem is about $100 I think.
