I've been using SafeClean and SafeShred for some time now to securely delete files that I would rather not have hanging around on my eMac, and have been satisfied with them so far. Of course, the "acid test" for such products is difficult to apply, as one would have to dismantle the machine and subject the hard drive to analysis by a REAL data recovery expert, a process usually only warranted where the value of the data greatly exceeds the substantial cost involved. Then there is the "forensic" analysis situation where the drive is confiscated by law enforcement authorities and analyzed for incriminating evidence, but I sincerely hope that this is not a situation to which any one on this list is or should ever be susceptible to.

SafeClean and SafeShred are both currently $25 (plus extra software for buying both) and offer a selectable number of passes using a variety of overwriting patterns. I'm not affiliated with company, just a satisfied user, given the caveat that I've not had to subject the results of their operations to professional scrutiny. YMMV.
