I haven't followed the entire thread, but I believe the original poster is doing the setup for the friend? Getting it started is trivial. Run two installers, then drag the GIMP icon to the dock. Installation is no different than any other Mac app you've installed in the past. Usability and technical aspects of the GIMP of course, are a different matter. Being an X11 app, it doesn't stick to Apple's interface guidelines (menu bar for each window, and when copying & pasting, I sometimes hit command instead of control.) I recall someone somewhere commenting that it doesn't support as deep a colour depth.
