I've been looking for a cheap older iMac - just to designate it the OS 9 machine, for older kids' games. Found one locally here - unfortunately I don't have all the specs, (I haven't seen it yet) but it is an 'original tray-loading iMac', so I'm sure that narrows it down a lot. There is an issue with the CD drive - the tray no longer works. Seller thinks the whole drive needs replacing. I have an external CD drive (sony spressa) - would that work for any software installs I need to do? (Can I boot from a system disk on external drive if necessary?) Is it fairly easy to replace the CD drive (and reasonably cheap!)?

All the tray-loaders have USB 1 and no Firewire. If your external drive is USB, you should have no problem installing apps or copying data from CD, but AFAIK you can't boot these Macs from a USB drive.
