I don't know who wrote it originally, but I saved this tidbit from an old post 
to this List; it may be just what you can use:

The iMacs 233-333 had a max ram spec of 256mb when they were produced. I have 
had several occasions when I put two 256mb sticks in and the top stick would 
only register as 128mb. 

If you have this happen, check to make sure that your processor card doesn't 
have metal retaining clips for the SIMMs. If it does, make sure they aren't 
touching any of the chip pins on the ram card. 

I had this happen, and the iMac worked fine, it just wouldn't register the full 
amount of memory. A quick bit of electrical tape to insulate the retaining 
clips cured the problem, and I had a Rev A happily working with 512 MB of ram 
(2x 256).
