Hi. I am moving soon and am looking for a good web-based e-mail system
that I can access from anywhere. Something like Hotmail, I guess. I
hear there are many different ones but have no way of knowing which
one
to choose. Hotmail is MS, isn't it?
If ALL you want is webmail, anybody's is as good as anyone else's.
However, I'd suggest that you look into all a .Mac membership can
offer you -- and I'll even tell you how to get one at a BARGAIN price!
(I'm not "selling" anything here for personal reward -- just a
satisfied customer)
There are lots of features to .Mac and their web page will explain
that far better than I can, but here are the BIG THREE (and a half)
reasons why I would *never* let my membership lapse.
1. Consistent email address -- I've had to change ISPs several times
over the last few years, but I've *never* had to send out an "update
your address book" message and spend months reminding people of my
"new" address, thanks to my memorable and consistent .Mac address. I
can check my email from any web-connected browser on any platform,
with absolutely NO ADVERTISING (for me that is a VERY big deal --
almost ALL the other services tack on ADS both for you reading mail
and when you SEND mail!). I can send BEAUTIFUL ecards (none of that
tacky Blue Mountain garbage!) that uses my very own address book, and
everything's compatible with my own Address Book on my Mac ... which
brings me to reason #2:
2. ISYNC. For me this is worth the money ALL BY ITSELF. I can keep my
work computer, my home computer, my laptop, my Palm AND my iPod
continuously synced with the same calendar/contacts/notes and other
info with (literally) one click. It's just incredible, and it does
more besides!
But wait, there's more!
3. IPHOTO GALLERIES. I don't think people really understand just HOW
COOL it is to take some pictures, transfer them to iPhoto, crop them,
and then ... press ONE BUTTON to start making a webpage gallery! All
I have to do at that point is choose a template, write the title and
descriptions, press the "Publish" button, and ... THAT'S ALL. The
page is up on the web JUST LIKE THAT. There are other services that
do something similar, but there's NOTHING that does it THAT EASY. And
I'm not even going to MENTION what else you can do with photos
and .Mac ... that's for you to find out!
Okay, enough with the hard sell: how about a bargain price to get you
started? The three features I've mentioned (which barely scratch the
surface!) are, to me, easily worth the $99 a year retail just for the
convenience -- but not everyone feels that way. Okay: how about $75
