Forgot to mention, I think the wireless keyboard & mouse are not
worth the money or the time (maintenance) - & you still need a wired
kb & mouse for setup.

This is definitely no longer the case. I'm not sure, however, if the change (automatic and instant detection and re-connection of Bluetooth equipment) comes with 10.4.x or if it's something in the hardware. I do know that all current Mac products (we set up a lot of new machines here in our shop) feature this, and the bluetooth thing is no longer an issue. The auto-setup on new Macs look for and recognise Bluetooth items before they are needed.

Those of you who have older equipment (and by "older" here I mean any Mac with an Apple Bluetooth card built-in that is NOT the current model) should try updating your OS, that may resolve the issue.
