I bought a used 350 Imac online and had the same problem. Was going to change the battery but being lazy by nature continued resetting the clock for about 2 weeks. It for some reason decided not to go back to 1904 after
that and I've been running it for about a year now. ???ED

My guess would be that the PRAM battery had discharged while sitting
unplugged, waiting for you to buy it. Then when you bought it and
left it plugged in for a couple of weeks, the battery was able to
charge to a high-enough level to hold the settings.

The PRAM battery is not charged by the Mac. It's not even a rechargeable battery. What more likely happened is that the network time server function was activated, or the correct time was set and the iMac was never unplugged from house current. Either one would let the iMac keep time even with a bad battery installed.
