I said it was a guess :)  Actually, my understanding is that some PRAM
(CMOS in the Intel world) batteries are recharged and some are not.  I
cannot say if this is definitely  the case for Ed's iMac, but I have
actually witnessed on several occasions where computers that had been
unplugged for a couple of years could not at first remember their
settings between reboots/power loss, but after being plugged in
continuously for a period of time started remembering their settings,
even after  being unplugged for several hours.  Having said that, I
confess that I've never seen it happen on a G3 or newer Mac, though I
think it happened for me on a Performa 6360 (different type of PRAM
battery than an iMac).  As always, your results may vary.
