Good list software will have an option that I highly recommend; automatic
subscription confirmation.
That is, a new fellow subscribing to the list is not fully subscribed
until the List Server replies to the subscriber with a unique token, and
the subscriber successfully returns that message with the unique token,
thus verifying that:
1. The subscriber does indeed want to subscribe, and the subscription has
not been forged by a bad guy.
2. The subscriber knows his / her email address.
3. The subscriber actually does receive mail at the address he / she
supplied.
You have just discovered how often items 2 and 3 are not true for some
subscribers to your list.
Any List with more than very small traffic should implement this feature.
