It's actually pretty easy to do too. We did a quickie of one at

Did it months ago. Doesn't have all the features, isn't even that
pretty, but we were only playing anyway. (see
http://www.bighouse-fanclub.com if you're curious who bighouse is).
As for clearing out the database - if it got busy enough the idea was to
clear out everything older than 30 days automatically. Very simple to
script, but little time to play these days. It does exactly as you say
- pulls the emails out of imail and inserts them into database. moving
from folder to folder, creating new folder, etc is all handled thru CF.
Our particular version of CF is suppose to have a bug with mail
attachments, but haven't run into it yet. An upgrade would eliminate
the possibility (but why fix what ain't broke yet).
We're coding the fancy stuff into another interface on another site.
