We have a lot of remote clients as well as local dialups.
The remote clients use clients that supports SMTP
authentication and we have relay by IP only set. It
works well for us. We started this way from the first
remote client so it has not been a problem. When
implementing such a setup the hardest part of it really
is making the remote clients understand why they
need to change their settings and how to.
For most of our clients this setup actually makes them feel
somewhat more secure also.
