Another nice thing about using the IMail database is that it gives you
machine independence. I have moved my IMail services between 4-5 servers at
various times and by NOT using the NT database it has been a snap.
For example, I moved IMail temporarily to a secondary web server so I
could upgrade the RAID on the primary. All I did was install IMail on it,
copy over the user folders, shut the old machine down, give the new machine
the IPs, import the registry (IMail part!) and away we go. Reverse to go
back.
Now, if the servers are in the same domain, no big deal. But if not, it
makes life much easier.

Let's say you run Company X, and your employees need to log onto your
server(s), and you want to supply them with an email account as well. In
this case, use NT database. This way when users change their LAN password,
their email password chages as well. if you terminate their employment,
their email access goes away when you remove their NT account.

However, if you are going to supply only email accounts to people (who won't
need access to your servers) you'll want to use the internal iMail database.
Also, the NT database starts to crap out at about 10,000 users or so.
