I would download a free hex editor and compare a good PST file with the one
in questions and make sure the beginning of each file (where it proclaims to
be a PST file) is the same.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have had that happen 2 or 3
times here, and have not been able to recover the pst, even with the use
of scanpst.

Outlook is opening & running fine.
I just need to get my mail, contacts, etc., from the corrupted pst file.

Hi Mike

If the Outlook program is crashing at the splash screen look for and
rename the following file - Outcmd.dat - this file when corrupt will
stop the program from opening. Running Scanpst will not fix this issue.

Reload the program will not ifx the issue either.

If that does not work the other file you can rename is extend.dat -
this will also stop Outlook from opening.

James Robb

Win98SE, Outlook 2000.
Permissions are ok. I have re-created the profile & tried to import or
restore from backup & they both give me the message "the file is not a
personal folders file"!

Mike -
Which OS and Outlook is the user using?
I would Check File & permissions in the profile.
I would Delete the profile and recreate it. I have seen similar problem
under Outlook 97.

If they can open Outlook, try exporting all folders individually except
the corrupted one.

Recently, one of our users tried to open Outlook & got an error message
(which they couldn't remember!) & Outlook quit.
Long story short, the pst file had become corrupt. When I try to open
it, or a copy from a tape backup, I get a message that it isn't a
personal folders file.
Any suggestions?
