Use a vacation message, then.  You can set that to send the reply message and then forward the received email to *-NUL.

Just forward their mail to the -NUL mailbox.  In other words, if the user account is jdoe, then forward mail to jdoe-NUL.  That deletes mail from the mailbox.  Alternately you can use the mailbox action of delete when forwarding, though it may be that 7.15 didn't have that.  If so, forwarding to -NUL should still work. 
 
Will the autoreply go out if the mail is forwarded? My guess, like Adam said, is "no".
