I only read the *.log files from Imail.  Exchange allows both a log file and Events to be recorded in the Event Viewer.  I have never looked to see if Imail has that feature.  I prefer the log files.  Easier to read....

The Logging level for SMTP Protocol Log in the IMS needs to be bumped up to have the log file created and to begin recording.  I have mine set at Maximum.  This is under the Diagnostic Logging tab.....  At maximum you get about the same information as the Imail logs.  The Exchange log is much more explicit about ETRN though.  I think that Imail calls it a directed delivery.

Does Exchange even have a detailed/debugging log facility or does MS just assume such grimy nuts and bolts aren't needed by GUI jockeys?......by Len Conrad

Can anyone actually defend Len's sarcasm???  There is not a more full featured Mail Server on this planet.  Imail has a market niche where Exchange is not cost effective.

Thanks this is of great help.

One other question, What setting causes Imail to log to the NT Event Viewer?

My logs look very similar but Noting shows up in EV.

Here is the text that is recorded in the event viewer

ETRN beverlycorp.com
 from 8890.beverlycorp.com succeeded.

and here is the log file:
is this enough detail for you...
Exchanges details are much better than Imails (not taking anything away from Imail)

What would show in the Imail log file when the ETRN command actually occurs?

search for "ETRN" in you log file, since Imail SMTP logs all smtp commands sent and receieved, afaics.

Does Exchange even have a detailed/debugging log facility or does MS just assume such grimy nuts and bolts aren't needed by GUI jockeys?
