This is really a poor comparison. If *all* you need is an SMTP/POP/Web
messaging server, then iMail offers alot of bang for the buck, and
Exchange is overkill. OTOH, if you need all that plus an integrated
client, plus resource and personel scheduling, plus shared calendars,
then Exchange and Groupwise are in their glory, and rightfully cost more
money.
FWIW, Novell offers a product called 'Novell Internet Messaging System'
(NIMS). NIMS is the offspring of the now defunct collaberation between
Novell and Netscape (novonyx). I offers the same fuctionality as iMail
(less the mailing lists), and integrates with Novell's NDS. For shops
that are primarily Netware, this alone can save quite a bit in
management costs, offsetting the slightly higher cost.
I guess we need to remember the old addage: "When the only tool you is a
hammer, everything becomes a nail"
